End horse-drawn carriages in New York City

A horse-drawn carriage ride may look charming, but behind this tourist attraction is a life of hardship for the horses forced to pull it. These sensitive animals are made to haul heavy carriages through crowded streets, loud traffic and vehicle exhaust—conditions that can be stressful, unsafe and completely unnatural for them. Long hours on hard pavement can contribute to painful leg, hoof and joint problems, while breathing polluted air and working in extreme heat or cold can put their health at risk.

Many carriage horses also spend their off-hours in cramped urban stables instead of open pasture, without the freedom to graze, move naturally or socialize as horses need. When they are no longer profitable, some face uncertain futures, including abandonment or slaughter.

A short ride for tourists can mean a lifetime of strain, confinement and danger for the horses pulling that carriage. Recent tragedies in New York City have city leaders poised to make changes that can have lasting impacts. It’s time we end these operations in New York City, please take action today.
