Tell Kroger: Animals Deserve Better

On a typical egg factory farm, a hen is crammed into a wire cage roughly the size of a microwave with as many as nine other birds, where she is unable to spread her wings for her entire life. Each hen is forced to eat, sleep and defecate in the same limited space and is denied almost everything that is natural to her.

These conditions are not only cruel to animals, but they increase the spread of diseases like salmonella, leading public health and food safety organizations to oppose the caging of egg-laying chickens.

A decade ago, Kroger pledged to eliminate battery cages from its supply chains. However, the company continues to keep selling eggs that come from caged chickens, ignoring public promises the company made to stop profiting from such abuse. This means that millions of chickens will continue to suffer in squalid, miserable cages for Kroger's stores even though the company told customers it would do away with such cruelty.

Dear Mr. Foran, 

Millions of hens in the egg industry are locked in cages, which virtually immobilize them and prevent them from spreading their wings. In 2016, Kroger pledged to eliminate cruel cages for egg-laying hens in its supply chain by 2025, but the company has backtracked and continues to profit off this cruelty. 

I am deeply concerned that Kroger failed to keep its pledge and continues to sell eggs from animals in extreme confinement.   

Companies like Amazon, Costco, McDonald’s, IHOP, Cheesecake Factory, Nestlé, and many others have all remained committed to reaching their pledges to eliminate cruel confinement from their supply chains in the U.S.—in some cases years before their initial goals—while Kroger has refused to keep its word. Two of Kroger’s top competitors, Target and Ahold Delhaize, recently reinstated and strengthened their plans to go cage-free with concrete action steps and public reporting after pressure from Humane World and other advocates. 

There is no excuse for Kroger to be falling short.  

For these reasons, I’m respectfully asking Kroger to honor its original animal welfare pledges and move away from battery cages immediately.
