Ohio: Help improve transparency at animal testing laboratories
A major shift is underway as the federal government works toward replacing outdated animal experiments with more sophisticated non-animal alternative methods. In addition to reducing animal suffering, these alternatives can provide researchers with superior information that’s rooted in human biology.
To successfully make the transition from animal experiments to non-animal technologies, laboratories must be transparent about the work they are doing in both fields. Identifying what non-animal research is being done in the state will also help create an understanding of what resources are needed to maximize the potential outcomes of that research and further accelerate progress.
H.B. 803 would require public colleges and universities to report annually on:
- Their progress on implementing the 3Rs (Replacing, Reducing and Refining animal experiments).
- The total number of animals they used in experiments, broken down by species.
- The estimated amount of state funding they allocated to animal experiments.
