Demand that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service protect pangolins

In 2025, the Trump administration proposed to list seven species of pangolins under the Endangered Species Act. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world, but only one species of pangolin is currently listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Humane World for Animals and our allies have worked for years to get the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect pangolins, but we need your help to ensure the agency quickly follows through to finalize desperately needed protections for these imperiled species!

Small and gentle, pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world, exploited for their scales and meat. Seven of eight pangolin species are not protected by the United States’ strongest law for protecting imperiled wildlife, the Endangered Species Act. That needs to change.  

In recent years, at least hundreds of thousands of pangolins have been killed, and their scales and meat trafficked across the globe. All pangolin species are imperiled—Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered—under the IUCN Red List (a tool used to assess the conservation status of species across the world). It’s high time we step up for these species and send a strong message to traffickers: hands off pangolins. 

According to U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, wildlife trafficking is among the world’s most lucrative funding sources for transnational criminal organization. Pangolin trafficking is increasingly driven by organized, criminal networks that traffic scales through global supply chains, often alongside drugs, weapons, and other illegal wildlife products. Pangolins are not merchandise for criminals to exploit—they are sentient, social animals whose survival depends on our actions.   

Listing pangolins as endangered under the Endangered Species Act would give the United States its strongest legal tools to shut down trade, prosecute traffickers, and disrupt organized criminal networks driving the global pangolin trade. 

I call on FWS ensure all pangolins are protected under the Endangered Species Act. These protections cannot come fast enough.
