Minnesota: Ask your state representative to prevent the sale of puppy mill puppies in pet stores

Exciting update! Humane pet store legislation has passed the Senate and will be voted on in the House soon! Minnesota is so close to banning the sale of puppy mill puppies in new pet shops.

Minnesota is home to just a handful of pet stores that sell commercially raised puppies, but there is currently nothing stopping bad actors from moving in, selling weeks old puppies from awful puppy mills, deceiving consumers and selling sick puppies. Public records show that most puppy-selling pet shops sell puppies from massive puppy mills with awful animal welfare records, where mother dogs are treated like breeding machines and puppies like mere products. No Minnesotan would knowingly support this cruelty.

Passing HF 2627 would prevent any new stores from selling puppies and require existing puppy stores to adhere to increased transparency requirements. Similar laws in other states have reduced the demand for puppy mill puppies and protected families from the heartbreak and financial devastation that often comes with buying a pet shop puppy.

The humane pet store bill passed the Senate with overwhelming, bipartisan support. As your constituent, I urge you to ensure that the humane pet store bill (HF 2627) passes the House too. Public records show that most pet shops buy puppies from massive, cruel puppy mills with terrible animal welfare records and resell them to unsuspecting consumers. Minnesota is vulnerable to an influx of puppy stores and families falling victim to misleading sales tactics, predatory puppy financing and the sale of sick or genetically disordered puppies requiring expensive veterinary care. 

This commonsense bill is a big step forward in protecting both animals and consumers. Minnesota will remain open to the booming pet products and services retailer market. Consumers looking to add a new pet to their family will still be able to obtain the dog of their choice from existing pet shops that adhere to the disclosure requirements, shelters, rescues or responsible breeders.
