Make fashion kind, end animal cruelty on the runway

Tens of millions of animals suffer and die every year for frivolous fur fashion, their beautiful fur turned into a trim on a coat, a pom on a hat or a keychain. Many designers, brands and retailers have now stopped using fur and more recently fashion weeks in Copenhagen, London and New York have gone fur-free. Yet Paris Fashion Week continues to allow brands to promote fur cruelty at its events.

I believe that fur is cruel. It has no place in fashion. As the organizer of Paris Fashion Week, I respectfully ask you to end your association with fur cruelty and ban animal fur from your events. 

A recently published European scientific opinion clearly states that the needs of animals, such as mink, foxes, raccoon dogs and chinchillas, cannot be met on fur farms. In addition to the cruelty inflicted on animals, the fur trade is also bad for the environment and a risk to public health.   

So many iconic international design houses—including Chanel, Saint Laurent, Chloé and Balenciaga—have committed to a fur-free future. As have many other brands and retailers, plus major publishing houses such as Condé Nast and Hearst, and fashion week organizers in Copenhagen, London and New York. 

Recently, more than 1.5 million EU citizens signed the Fur-Free Europe European Citizens’ Initiative calling for an end to EU fur farming and trade. The farming of mink, foxes and raccoon dogs is no longer allowed in France, an action that was supported by 77% of French citizens. 

Please take this opportunity to end your association with the cruel fur trade and commit to a fur-free future for Paris Fashion Week.
