Tell USDA: End horse soring now!
Congress passed the Horse Protection Act decades ago with the goal of ending the cruel practice of horse soring—the deliberate infliction of pain on horses' legs and hooves to force an exaggerated gait. More than half a century later, bad actors continue to skirt the law, in part because the Tennessee walking horse industry (where soring has occurred for decades) has been allowed to police itself and turn a blind eye to even the worst cases of cruelty.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced that it will once again suspend implementation of a final regulation designed to root out and extinguish these despicable practices by ending industry self-policing and making other needed reforms. USDA must now take urgent and powerful action—and that starts with an end to self-policing.
