American Kennel Club: Stop protecting puppy mills like Sportsman’s Kennels
Our recent investigation into Sportsman’s Kennels, a dog breeding facility in Long Island, New York, revealed shocking conditions and sickly dogs. Many of the adult dogs had sores and missing or matted fur. The puppies appeared to be in poor condition as well with some seen vomiting, coughing or wheezing. Disturbingly, this substandard facility proudly touts its American Kennel Club affiliation on its website and has AKC documents displayed on the wall inside the building.
While disturbing, Sportsman’s Kennels’ link to the AKC is not surprising, as they have a long history of opposing common-sense legislation that would protect animals. Despite the image they try to portray, the AKC is not an animal welfare organization. It is a purebred dog registry sustained by dog registration fees. Because of their financial dependence on commercial breeders, the AKC aggressively opposes most laws and ordinances which aim to protect dogs in puppy mills, prevent the sexual abuse of animals, and protect dogs from suffering in extreme temperatures.
