Preserve the Endangered Species Act!
Since 1973, the Endangered Species Act has been our nation’s strongest tool in fighting extinction; at that time, the Supreme Court called it “the most comprehensive legislation for the preservation of endangered species enacted by any nation.” Now, the ESA is credited with preventing the extinction of 99% of species protected under it. Now the very law that saved the bald eagle and humpback whale is at risk of being undermined and we need your help to protect it!
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed changes that would weaken the effectiveness of the ESA, hurting the vulnerable species it was meant to protect and making it harder for them to recover.
Changes to the ESA regulations that, if proposed and finalized, could devastate wildlife include:
- Repealing the USFWS 4(d) blanket rule which presumptively protects threatened species and cuts costs by granting them the protections that apply to endangered species.
- Revisions that make it more difficult to list imperiled species, or easier to prematurely delist them.
- Revisions that restrict habitat protection and government cooperation—both of which are essential to conservation efforts.
The Endangered Species Act is critical to the survival of our nation’s most imperiled animals and we must speak out now to safeguard our strongest tool against extinction!
