The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced that it will not release a National Wolf Recovery Plan that many Americans expected to see this December. The announcement also said that the agency no longer thinks that wolves deserve protection under the Endangered Species Act, signaling that the Trump Administration is doubling down on its efforts to delist them nationwide.

The science shows that FWS couldn’t be more wrong.

Wolves have not yet recovered from the killing campaigns that drove them to the brink of extinction in the lower 48 states. They are family-oriented, smart but shy, and struggling to survive alongside us in an ever-changing world. These incredible animals deserve a science-based, humane and comprehensive approach to their conservation—not to be shot down or run over at the whim of trophy hunters and animal abusers.

Wolves are a wonderful and irreplaceable part of our American wilderness and culture. In the lower 48 states, they have not recovered from the relentless killing campaigns that almost wiped them out. Today, wolves occupy only a fraction of their historic range. They continue to face many threats, including poaching, loss of habitat, and state agencies that have terrible track records when it comes to wolf coexistence. 

Wolves matter to me, and I want them to be around to inspire future generations, too. 

To ensure that can happen, they still need protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. We also need to better understand this important species and their world as it is now. The numerical federal recovery goals set decades ago are no longer relevant – they are quite simply based on long outdated science. 

I call on the Fish and Wildlife Service to give wolves and fair chance, and protect them under the Endangered Species Act.
