Oregon: Help protect wildlife by supporting HB 2977!
Oregon’s wildlife and natural heritage are part of what makes this state so special. But as our communities grow and outdoor recreation increases, the need to better protect wildlife, reduce conflicts, and promote coexistence between people and animals has never been more urgent.
The “1% for Wildlife” bill (HB 2977) is a commonsense solution that would help safeguard Oregon’s wildlife for generations to come. By adding just a 1% increase to the state’s transient lodging tax—along with an additional 0.25% under a proposed amendment—this bill would create much-needed funding to:
- Establish a Wildlife Stewardship Program under the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, with dedicated biologists to help prevent conflicts with wildlife, reducing unnecessary killing of wild animals.
- Create a wolf coexistence biologist position to help livestock owners minimize and prevent conflicts with wolves, decreasing lethal management of these iconic animals.
- Support wildlife rehabilitators through a new grants program that provides critical care for injured and orphaned wildlife.
- Bolster anti-poaching efforts that protect Oregon’s wildlife from illegal killing and trafficking.
This forward-thinking legislation reflects Oregon values: protecting wildlife, supporting local communities and preserving the state’s rich biodiversity for the future.
