Demand that the Fish and Wildlife Service protect pangolins

The Trump administration recently announced that they will propose to list seven species of pangolins under the Endangered Species Act. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world, but only one species of pangolin is currently listed as endangered under the ESA. Humane World for Animals and our allies have worked for years to get the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to take action to protect pangolins, but we need your help to ensure that the agency quickly follows through on its announcement to finalize these desperately needed protections for these imperiled species!

Wildlife trafficking is the fourth largest organized crime in the world, and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations estimates it generates about $23 billion each year for transnational criminal organizations and cartels, the very same groups that traffic people, drugs and weapons around the globe. These criminals profit off vulnerable animals, and use them to disguise their crimes.  

Small and gentle, pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world, exploited for their scales and meat, with significant trade bringing them to or passing through the U.S. Despite this, the majority of pangolin species are not protected by the United States’ strongest environmental law, the Endangered Species Act. That needs to change.  

In recent years, hundreds of thousands of pangolins have been killed for their scales, and all pangolin species are imperiled—Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered—under the IUCN Red List (a tool used to assess the conservation status of species across the world). It’s high time we step up for these species and send a strong message to traffickers: hands off pangolins. 

Because of this, I urge FWS to quickly finalize their proposal to list seven species of pangolins under the ESA. These protections could not come fast enough.
