Stop a dangerous bill that could wipe out animal cruelty laws
A monumental threat is facing animals in our country! Legislation recently introduced in the U.S. Congress could be disastrous for animals.
Ever since the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the strongest farm animal protection law in the country—California's Proposition 12—lobbyists representing only a segment of the pork industry have pushed for federal legislation to undo not just Proposition 12, but potentially any state sales regulation aimed at addressing animal welfare.
The so-called “Food Security and Farm Protection Act” (S. 1326) was recently introduced in the U.S. Congress. While the bill name has changed, the bill text has not – it is identical to the “Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression” (EATS) Act from the last Congress. It is still designed to wipe out state laws that ban the sale of products from cruelly confined egg-laying chickens, mother pigs and veal calves. If passed, it could also destroy over a thousand other state laws, including laws aimed at terrible cruelties, like the abuse of dogs in puppy mills.
But it doesn’t end there. State laws on a vast range of additional concerns are also at risk, including pesticide application on fields, arsenic in food, protection against lead poisoning, labor standards, and more.
Animals (and people) need your help to stop the unraveling of even the most basic protections.
