New Jersey: Support S2754 to outlaw wildlife killing contests

Urge your state senator to outlaw cruel, senseless and ecologically destructive wildlife killing contests in New Jersey! During these gruesome games, participants compete to kill the most, the largest or even the smallest coyotes, foxes, raccoons, squirrels and other species for cash and prizes.

Hundreds of animals may be killed at a single event and countless others may be injured. During springtime contests, dependent young may be orphaned and left to die from starvation, predation or exposure. After the killing is over, the animals are often dumped like trash, away from the public eye.

S2754 will end cruel, senseless and ecologically destructive wildlife killing contests in New Jersey. Wildlife is enjoyed by all citizens of the state, not just the small group of people who make a “cash and prizes” game of killing animals. Ten other states have already banned the bloodsport—it's time for New Jersey to do the same!

As a New Jerseyan who cares deeply about animals and our natural ecosystem, I urge you to support S2754, which will ban wildlife killing contests in our state. The proposed bill would end cruel, senseless and ecologically destructive killing of wildlife for money and prizes in New Jersey.  

These contests send a dangerous message to our youth that hunting is about nothing more than killing animals for cash, prizes and bragging rights. Undercover footage has documented children at killing contests check-ins, playing among the dead animals and helping to count and weigh them.

Wildlife killing contests do not serve any legitimate wildlife management purpose and are even counterproductive to sound wildlife management. S2754 is in line with New Jerseyans' humane values and the best available wildlife management science. 

Ten states—including our Eastern neighbors of New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maryland—have already outlawed killing contests. It's time for New Jersey to join them.
