Massachusetts: Urge your legislators to pass H.3935 and S.616
Wildlife trafficking and the trade in wildlife parts is a global crisis that threatens elephants and rhinos with extinction. Each year, thousands of elephants and rhinos are slaughtered for their tusks and horns. Scientists have described the ongoing decline in African elephant populations as “continuing and likely irreversible.” Rhino populations are also dwindling, with fewer than 27,000 rhinos remaining in the wild.
State ivory and rhino horn sales bans fill gaps that federal laws and regulations do not address, and they are critical to ending the U.S. trade.
Massachusetts plays a crucial role in this fight. Massachusetts ranks among the top states for online ivory sales, and our previous investigations have found a thriving ivory product market. To address this, bills under consideration in Massachusetts (H.3935 and S.616) would prohibit the trade of ivory and rhino horn in the Commonwealth.
These bills are critical to end Massachusetts’ participation in the markets for cruel products made from wildlife. Ending the trade in ivory and rhino horn is critical if we are to ensure these beloved animals do not disappear. We need your help to make sure this bill passes.
