Minnesota: Ask your state lawmakers to prevent the sale of puppy mill puppies in pet stores
Exciting update! Humane pet store legislation is moving through both chambers. Minnesota is so close to banning the sale of puppy mill puppies in new pet shops.
Minnesota is home to just a handful of pet stores that sell commercially raised puppies, but there is currently nothing stopping bad actors from moving in, selling weeks old puppies from awful puppy mills, deceiving consumers and selling sick puppies. Public records show that most puppy-selling pet shops sell puppies from massive puppy mills with awful animal welfare records, where mother dogs are treated like breeding machines and puppies like mere products. No Minnesotan would knowingly support this cruelty.
Passing SF 1943/HF 2627 would prevent any new stores from selling puppies and require existing puppy stores to adhere to increased transparency requirements. Similar laws in other states have reduced the demand for puppy mill puppies and protected families from the heartbreak and financial devastation that often comes with buying a pet shop puppy.
Tell your state senator and representative that you’d like to see SF 1943/HF 2627 pass this year to keep Minnesota’s pet market humane.
