Amid an ongoing housing crisis, the Humane World for Animals has been working hard to prevent the displacement of vulnerable families and their pets. A record number of households and nearly three-fourths of United States renters have pets. Most Americans think of their pets as members of the family, so when renters have trouble finding affordable housing that will allow their companion animals, it can create a crisis alienating tenants from safe and affordable housing.

If we want to protect pets, we must protect the people who love them. Stronger protections for companion animals and their caretakers begin with local government. Pet restrictions such as breed and weight limitations, as well as exorbitant pet fees, are huge barriers for many seeking secure housing. No family should be faced with the unthinkable situation of having to choose between a roof over their heads and their beloved pet.
