End the export of live horses for slaughter!

In Canada, thousands of live horses are tragically flown by air to Japan so they can be slaughtered for raw meat. Crammed into wooden crates, these horses endure long hours of transport without water, food or rest. Once they reach their destination, Canada has no jurisdiction over what happens to these exhausted horses.

In 2021, the Liberal Party made the commitment to end this inhumane trade. They partially made good on this promise by introducing Bill C-355—the bill passed through the House of Commons, but with Parliament prorogued, it died on the order paper. We are now urging the government to introduce new legislation to protect Canadian horses. Please help ensure that live exports of horses for slaughter stops in Canada and save countless horses from this horrible fate. Send a letter to the Canadian government now!

Dear Prime Minister Carney and Minister MacDonald,

I am writing to urge the Canadian government to introduce and pass legislation that prohibits the live export of horses by air for slaughter. Every year, thousands of horses suffer from this horrible practice, and it is time for Canada to put an end to it. 

The horses that are exported live for slaughter are being bred for this purpose in Canada and are sent on long-haul flights to Japan. The conditions in which they are transported raises serious animal welfare concerns. 

Multiple horses are crammed into wooden crates and transported for long hours without food, water or rest. Air transport in these conditions is particularly stressful for horses who panic easily because of their strong fight-or-flight instinct. The risk of injuries or death is serious and has been documented in the past. 

Once the horses reach their destination, Canada has no jurisdiction on what happens to them. Canadian laws and regulations in terms of humane transport, treatment and slaughter no longer apply. 

So far, this industry has subjected tens of thousands of horses to inhumane transport conditions just so they can be slaughtered abroad. It is time to make sure no more horses suffer in these live exports for slaughter.  

Please make sure that the Canadian government takes action and introduces and passes legislation that will end this practice for good.
