Every year, thousands of pets are relinquished to animal shelters due to housing-related issues, and breed-specific policies are a major contributor. Breed bans are a notoriously ineffective tool for increasing public safety and reducing dog bites. They are expensive and difficult to enforce, as using physical appearance to determine a dog’s breed is subjective and breed is not predictive of behavior.

I stand with Humane World for Animals to fight against Breed-specific legislation. Breed-specific policies are not founded in science, nor do they improve public safety. They are a notoriously ineffective tool for increasing public safety and reducing dog bites. Additionally, they are expensive and difficult to enforce, diverting tax-payer dollars from more important and effective programs. Breed bans place additional burdens on dog owners and contributes to overcrowding in our animal shelters.
