Animals are counting on you to protect them!
A monumental threat is facing animals in the U.S. The new Farm Bill is being used as a way to gut state animal welfare laws. If this legislative package passes with a very harmful provision, Congress could override the will of voters and erase hard-won protections for animals.
Ever since the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the strongest farm animal protection law in the country—California's Proposition 12—lobbyists representing only the worst segment of the pork industry have pushed Congress to overturn it and many other state laws protecting animals. Industry allies in Congress are trying to use the Farm Bill to implement their so-called "fix."
While this is a rebranded version of past unsuccessful attacks on animal welfare, the Farm Bill is a very real, current threat now, particularly because the chairman of the House Agriculture Committee is pushing this “fix.” If it is enacted, hundreds of state laws protecting animals and addressing disease control, toxic materials, food labeling and more could be destroyed.
This so-called “fix” is an example of animal suffering for profit , massive federal overreach, handouts to favored industries, and backroom deals that benefit the wealthy.
Your voice is critical to stop the unraveling of even the most basic protections
TAKE ACTION
Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative and urge them to oppose the House Farm Bill (H.R. 7567) which contains Section 12006 (the Save Our Bacon Act). You can find their contact information here. You can simply say, "Prop 12 and other state animal welfare laws should be preserved and do not need to be ‘fixed’ as pork industry lobbyists claim. As your constituent, I urge you to oppose any Farm Bill that seeks to nullify state animal protection laws, like Section 12006 in H.R. 7567 currently does."
